How much roughly for 3 weeks in Australia PP
I fancy organising a trip to Australia for me and my wife next year, so how much per person is roughly needed for 3 weeks.

Ideas on best places etc welcome

Would you be staying in one location for 3 weeks or travelling ?

Depends on lot of things. When are you flying out (Christmas time flights go right up in price), are you planning on travelling round much or staying in the same place? Are you staying in top level hotels or staying with friends?

I spent three weeks over Christmas there - reckon it was somewhere between two and a half to three grand for the entire trip, and that was mainly staying with friends and focusing only on Sydney/Melbourne.

£1100 roughly for the flights, couple of extra hundred quid for a hotel in Hong Kong (great city, breaks the back of the jetlag too), an appartment in Sydney for a week, £700. Brisbane for a week not quite as much, mebbe £500 but then you're central for both Byron Bay and my particular favourite, Noosa Heads. Car hire from when you're in Brisbane etc for a couple of weeks £400. I wouldn't try and do much more although there's loads to see, or you'll burn out! You can always come back.

Then you've got your food and drink which you ain't going to want to skimp on because it's all fuckin delicious! How long's a bit of string though, eh? Depends on if you want top hotels, or hostels.

Whatever, it's not cheap but you'll fuckin love it!!

Depends how you want to live you could do it for £3k on the cheap or £5k comfortable. Went and stayed 4* for three weeks, went Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Gold Coast the last week about £5k all booked myself internal flights, food and drink but that was a couple of years ago when pound was worth 1.80 odd.

Flying out there tomorrow (Perth) using airpoints, so no airfares to front up with and staying with my Daughter at her house, total cost probably closer to fuck all.

I went back 3 years ago. Exchange rate was similar to now, maybe a bit worse. Everything seemed to cost double what it should. A bit like Switzerland in prices.

Aggravated robbery should do it.

Staying there is cheap Air b'n'b. Flights are dear. @£1500 simple economy.

Food and drink is very expensive, hard to eat cheaply here.

Lucky to get breakfast for under £12

Depends on what style you want, backpacking is pretty cheap, $30 or $40 a night should do it.

Basic hotel/motel you will need to budget at least $120/$150, decent hotel up around $200 a night, 4/5 star, then you will be lucky to get change from $300 at the minimum

Eating out can be pretty cheap particularly the big city's and Asian, i can get a lovely big bowl of beef noodles locally for $10, and a decent spread for me and the Mrs for around $40, average Pub meal you will be looking at around $15 to $20, and a beer around $7 here in Sydney.

Nice restaurant without being too formal or upmarket you will be looking at $30 to $50 each, fine dinning at least $85, Macdonalds for a bit of fast food, then $10/$12 sees you get a basic burger meal deal.

If you are doing the self catering thing then prices here are not too dissimilar to the UK IMO, overall that is, some things are cheaper other things more expensive.

If i was coming from the UK and not backpacking then AFTER paying the airline tickets i would budget at least $5000 to $6000 Aussie Dollars for the 3 weeks, if you want 4/5 star all the way then its going to be a lot more, up near $10K at least.

Why not plan the trip first, jump on Expedia or one of the hotel sites and price up the trip, do the same with what attractions or activities you want to see, same with transport, bare in mind distances here though, a bus trip from Melbourne to Sydney may look cheap but its going to be about 10 to 12 hours long...

For 3 weeks i would look at doing just the East Coast, fly into Melbourne or Adelaide and out of Cairns.

The BEST thing about Australia is that once you get there, you're only a couple of hours away from NZ, where the scenery is better and the people nicer.

No offence Sydney.

We had a nice lunch in Sydney harbour last year and it was a lot cheaper than London IMO

May surprise you, but i actually agree, well to a point, so no offence taken, in many ways NZ is the nicer place, well until it comes to work, wages and opportunities.............then im afraid Sydney or Melbourne win hands down, bit like London and rural England were there is some fantastic places and countryside but unless your either loaded or have a rural occupation there aint much prospects for you.

Re: How much roughly for 3 weeks in Australia PP
I think that I was out there the same time as you Ted and you're right - eating out in the heart of Sydney was much cheaper than London. The dollar was almost 2 to the pound! Cheap as chips! Since the Brexit vote the pound is worth about 20 per cent less against the Aus dollar so much more expensive. Hopefully it'll be back up there again by next year as I'm out there again but I won't be holding my breath!
